Product Description

8 tracks, 45 minutes. Debut full-length album for Southern.

90 Day Men was a progressive rock band formed in 1995 in St. Louis, Missouri and later based out of Chicago, Illinois. Their name is a slang term used by corrections officers to refer to prison inmates who are slated to undergo psychiatric examination. They disbanded in 2005. Former members of the band now play in Lichens, Disappears and Bloodiest.

The group began as an early post-hardcore band, similar to that of Louisville, Kentucky groups such as Slint and June of 44. Formed as a trio in 1995 by Brian Case, Cayce Key and Chandler McWilliams, they released their first 7 inch single in 1996 entitled, "Taking Apart the Vessel". Robert Lowe joined the group in 1997 on trumpet and vocals but later moved to bass when McWilliams departed. Their first recording with this lineup was the 1997 7 inch single "If You Can Bake a Cake, You Can Build a Bomb", followed by an EP on Temporary Residence in 1998. In late 1998 they signed with Southern Records, who released their first full-length, entitled (It (Is) It) Critical Band, in 2000; by this time keyboardist Andy Lansangan had joined the group. Two further LPs followed; 2002's To Everybody and 2004's Panda Park were both the subject of significant critical acclaim.

"No one song showcases their new strengths like the aforementioned "We Blame Chicago," a piano and wah-wah-driven piece that swoops and darts through two tuneful movements, disintegrates into noise, then returns triumphantly to the original theme. 90 Day Men function like a musical assembly line, with each member playing simple phrases that add up to a cohesive and complex whole. While many bands that take this approach sound overly choreographed and rigid, Lansangan's jazzy style keeps things loose, giving off at least the appearance of improvisational energy."  - 7.8/10 Pitchfork
